Findhornに滞在している間に、大学の友人が私を訪ねてきました。彼は大学在学中に哲学を専攻していたので、私がこの場所のことを手紙に書いたのを見て興味を持っていました。さて、ディーバと NatureSpiritsの概念は世界の大部分にとってはちょっと「非科学的」です。それでも私の友人はそれらが存在することを受け入れているようでした。でもある日私達がこれらについて話していた時、彼は私がかなり決定的な質問だと思ったことを尋ねました - 他の人から聞いたことがある。 “でも何故天使やディーバやNatureSpiritsが必要なんだい？世界は今のままで十分素晴らしいじゃないか？”

私の回答は、もちろん、私たちは彼らをここに連れてくることを選んでいるのではなく、彼らを想像しているのでもないということでした。 彼らは私たちと同じように全体の一部として存在しており、私たちは彼らの存在を尊重し、より効果的に彼らと協力する方法を学んでいるところです。 なぜ私たちが人間を持つ必要があるのか、地球は人間なしで十分に素晴らしいのに、と彼らは言うかもしれません。 彼らは存在し、そして全体の生態系の一部なので、私たちは全体の幸福のために彼らと協力して働くことを学ぶべきです。

サトルワールドに対するこの態度は珍しいことではありません。 見えないとすると、それは存在するのでしょうか？　 私たちは見ることができない多くのことを、しばしばそれについて考えることなしに受け入れます。 でも私たちは自分の感覚に不信感を抱くように私たちの文化によって訓練されているため、サトルワールドとのつながりを知覚する感覚を見落としています。 そして、自分たちが知っていると思っていることにとても固執しているので、新しい情報や知覚にオープンになれないのです。

宇宙には謎と、学ぶべき新しいことがあります。 そして、助けになる準備ができている多くの聡明なマインドや明るい意識があります。 私たちの心を注意深くし、新しい洞察や知見にオープンでいるならば、私たち

が人生を通して一緒に歩んでいる仲間を見つけて驚くかもしれません。

Is Subtle Reality Real?

When I was in my early 20s, I went to live in the Findhorn community in

northern Scotland for a few years. This was a time for me of opening to a

spiritual life and learning new ways of seeing myself and the world I was

living in. This is where I met people, Dorothy Maclean and David Spangler

among them, who told of their conversations with non-physical

intelligences that I had never imagined existed, and yet I felt such a

resonance with what they shared that I felt I had found a spiritual home, a

home that I knew on a very deep level. Dorothy Maclean's stories of her

communications with the Devas, described as overlighting intelligences of

Nature, were completely new to me. And yet, partly because of her

grounded practicality and partly because of the corroborating stories I

heard, I had little trouble accepting that these beings existed and that we

could partner with them. (Many of Dorothy's stories have been described

in her book To Hear The Angels Sing.* )

So why did I accept that all this was real? Peter Caddy, one of the

founders of Findhorn, used to say, "The proof of the pudding is in the

eating." Peter, very pragmatic, would pose questions to Dorothy about

gardening. It made sense. The community needed to grow their own food

and Dorothy was communicating with nature beings, so why not ask them

about growing a garden? Peter would ask Dorothy to get answers from

the Devas to questions he had - like how far apart and how deep to plant

the peas, for example. Being a practical man, he asked practical

questions. And Findhorn's garden thrived, inexplicably so!

When the President of the British Soil Association came to visit, having

heard Peter talk on a radio show about the success of this garden in the

dunes, he was impressed with the health of the garden given the condition

of the sandy soil. He left with a sample of the soil that had been built up

through organic composting, believing that the soil would be deficient in X

minerals. He called back later to challenge Peter to give up his secret.

The soil sample proved to be perfectly balanced, which could not be

explained simply by the materials the gardeners were composting with.

Dorothy had always been told by the Devas that the love that humans put

into the garden as they worked could be used by the Devas and nature

spirits to work with and enhance the human intent - in this case to create

healthy soil. These humans were growing food to eat, so nature worked

with them. The result, then, was miraculously balanced soil produced by

this partnership with subtle beings.

Peter loved to give tours of the garden, telling stories about the power of

collaboration with these invisible nature beings and showing the visible

proof of their work. One story I particularly remember was of a hedge of

rose bushes that lined a fence by the road in the community. One thing to

know about Peter is that if he found someone visiting who held a

particular skill, he would recruit that skill if he could. In the case of the

rose hedge, a man visiting the community with his wife confessed his

expertise with roses, so Peter immediately showed him this place by the

road which he wanted beautify, asking for suggestions of what to plant

there.

Now, this particular man had been dragged to Findhorn by his wife who

believed deeply in subtle beings and was a fan of the work being done

there. Her husband,however, believed none of it. He decided he was

going to prove to his wife once and for all that this was all nonsense, so

he would never have to be dragged there again! The rose variety he

recommended to Peter was a delicate, sensitive bush native to warm, mild

climates of the Mediterranean that he knew would never survive in the

harsh conditions of Northern Scotland. The man returned a year or so

later expecting to gloat as he inspected the dead bushes. Much to his

astonishment, a beautiful lush hedge of thriving rose bushes greeted him.

This was all the proof he needed to open his mind to the possibility that

subtle beings were helping.

While I was staying at Findhorn, a friend from college came to visit me. He

had majored in philosophy while at university, and was interested to see

this place I wrote about in my letters. Now, the concept of Devas and

Nature Spirits is a little "woo woo" to most of the world, and yet my friend

seemed to accept that they existed - probably his study as a philosophy

major gave the idea fertile ground. But one day as we were talking about

these subtle beings he asked what I thought was a pretty definitive

question - one I have heard since from others: "But why have angels or

devas or nature spirits? The world is pretty wonderful just as it is." It was

pretty obvious by this question that while he thought he could keep an

open mind about such possibilities as the existence of unseen beings, he

didn't really accept that they were real. He thought he was open minded,

but to his unconscious mind, the people at Findhorn were imagining

nature spirits in an attempt to make the world more magic by adding a

layer of mystery to its mundane reality.

My response was, of course, that we are not choosing to have them here,

or imagining them. They exist as part of the whole just as we do, and we

are just learning how to respect their presence and collaborate with them

more effectively. We might as well say why do we need to have humans,

the earth is wonderful enough without them? As these presences do exist

and are part of the whole ecosystem, we should learn to work in

cooperation with them for the wellbeing of the whole.

This attitude toward the subtle worlds is not uncommon. If we can't see it,

then does it exist? We accept many things that we can't see, often without

thinking about it. But we are so trained by our culture to mistrust our

perceptions that we often overlook those senses which do perceive our

connections with subtle worlds. And we can get so locked into what we

think we know that we fail to be open to new information or perceptions.

There are real mysteries in the universe, and new things to learn; and

there are many wise minds and bright consciousnesses ready to help. If

we keep our minds alert and open to new insights and perceptions we

may be surprised by the companions we find ourselves walking with in

our journey through life.
